On September 16, 2007, the 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) was released by Transparency International, the global the nongovernmental organization against corruption.

According to the report, Seychelles ranks 57th in the cleanness of its government in a list of 180 countries in 2007. To compare this position with the previous results, in 2004 Seychelles’ CPI was 48, in 2005 it was 55, while in 2006 it was 63. So, a negative tendency has turned into a positive one this year.

The 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index provides the greatest country coverage of any CPI as it looks at perceptions of public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories. This index draws on 14 expert opinion surveys, scoring countries on a scale from 0 to 10. Zero indicates high levels of perceived corruption, while 10 means low levels of perceived corruption.

Seychelles’ CPI score in 2004 was 4.4, in 2005 – 4.0, in 2006 – 3.6, and 2007 its score is 4.5. The highest CPI score this year is 9.6 for Finland, Denmark and New Zealand, while the lowest is 1.4 for Myanmar and Somalia.

Year Seychelles Corruption Perception Index Seychelles position Total positions in the Corruption Top
2004 4.4 48 146
2005 4.0 55 159
2006 3.6 63 163
2007 4.5 57 180

Scores in some African countries including Seychelles are significantly higher in the 2007 CPI, which reflects the positive progress of anti-corruption efforts and show that perceived levels of corruption can be lowered by political will and reform.

Huguette Labelle, chairwoman of Transparency International, commented that the 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index reveals that correlation between corruption and poverty is still obvious.

Also, Transparency International provided the 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index regional ranking. It ranked 52 African countries. In regional countru rank, Seychelles is ranked 5th out of 52, which is evidently a good result. The “cleanest” African country is Botswana, while the “dirtiest” is Somalia.
